Japan is back open for business! After a few years of travel restrictions, U.S. citizens can travel to Japan once again. But before you book your tickets, it’s important to understand the rules that protect U.S. travelers who visit Japan and what it means for future tourism in the country.
The United States is not on Japan’s list of countries whose citizens can visit Japan without being quarantined.
The United States is not on Japan’s list of countries whose citizens can visit Japan without being quarantined for 14 days, but some exceptions are possible.
The United States does not have a formal agreement with Japan regarding the use of quarantine facilities in the event that members of the public arrive from areas affected by an outbreak and need to be isolated and treated. However, there has been discussion between officials from both countries about establishing such an agreement in the future and this could eventually lead to changes in the current situation.
Travelers from the United States must be able to provide a certificate of a negative COVID-19 test result.
All travelers entering the country must be able to provide a certificate of a negative COVID-19 test result taken within 72 hours of their flight.
This requires that they take what’s called a PCR test, which can detect the virus from blood and other bodily fluids. In order for it to be considered valid by Japanese authorities, the test has to have been administered within 72 hours before entry into Japan and must return negative results for all strains of COVID-19 (the full name for pandemic influenza A virus H1N1).
Travelers from the United States will have to remain at the airport until they get the results.
Travelers from the United States will receive a PCR test upon arrival at Narita airport in Tokyo and at Kansai airport in Osaka, and will have to remain at the airport until they get the results.
The test will be taken by Customs officials at Narita or Kansai airports within 72 hours of flight. If you are found positive, you’ll be moved to another area of the airport where your temperature will be checked every 30 minutes until it drops below 100 degrees Fahrenheit- is japan open for tourism.
If a traveler tests negative, they will be allowed to go to their hotel
If a traveler tests negative, they will be allowed to go to their hotel (they cannot change hotels during their quarantine), but must stay there for two weeks.
While Japan has an excellent healthcare system and the risk of infection is low, if you are planning on visiting Japan or any country with Zika virus transmission at this time, it’s best to take precautions such as wearing long-sleeved clothing and mosquito repellent when outdoors.
If they test positive, they will be transferred to a medical facility at their own expense.
The PCR test is a blood test that measures the amount of virus in your body. If you test positive, it means you have been infected with the influenza A or B viruses. You are then quarantined at your own expense and sent to a medical facility for treatment. You will remain there until all symptoms disappear completely and your immune system returns to normal function. While at the medical facility, you must be accompanied by two people who were not infected by anyone else while they were in Japan. The cost of this treatment can reach $15,000 per day!
While at their hotel, they are not allowed to leave their room or receive visitors.
- While at their hotel, they are not allowed to leave their room or receive visitors.
- They must keep the tracing app on at all times. If it turns off, then the police will be called to pick them up and take them back to the detention center.
- They have to keep their phone battery charged because if it dies then the police will be called again and this time they may find themselves in jail for more than just a few days.
- They have to keep their rooms clean, especially since Japanese people are very neat freaks when it comes to hygiene. Also, they should turn down their AC when they’re sleeping so as not make too much noise while sleeping (even though you might need some cool air)- is japan open for tourism.
Travelers must download a tracing app onto their phone and keep it on while in Japan.
- You will need to download a tracing app onto your phone and keep it on while in Japan. This is a way for Japanese officials to see where you are at all times, as well as ensure that you are not sick or a threat to the country. It’s also how they can make sure that you don’t leave Japan without telling them first—and if they notice that you don’t have the app running when they’re supposed to know where you are, they’ll come find out what’s up with that!
- If someone doesn’t have their tracing app turned on, then something very bad has happened (like maybe they’ve fallen into a coma), so officials will come check up on them right away!
While this is a very complicated process, it’s possible for US citizens to visit Japan. However, depending on the nature of your trip and personal circumstances, you may need to plan ahead and be prepared for some complications. If you’re planning a visit any time soon, check with your doctor about whether or not you need to get tested before traveling abroad.
